All our food is obtained directly or indirectly from plants. After constructing plant "maps" from their various parts and discussing each part's function, we will examine assorted fruits and vegetables to determine which parts of the plants we eat. Then we will eat them! Everyone will plant a vegetable to take home. Assorted and unspecified fruits and vegetables will be used - this activity is not recommended for persons with fruit or vegetable allergies.

In this workshop, you will assemble a homemade flashlight just like many American children created during the war. Use your flashlight to read at night or to send a Morse Code message to a friend!
Kite Making

Learn all about the history of kites; from Ben Franklin's uses as a youngster and an adult to how they are used for studying weather at Blue Hills Observatory in Milton, MA. See several different kite styles, learn the different names for kites around the world, and build a 21" tall Eddy kite to keep. Would you like to be a hot shot toy designer? At Build-It-Yourself, your mission is to invent a toys that will make your friends say, "I want one of those!" In this 30 minute toy invention workshop, you will get some ideas for how to build amazing contraptions made from LEGO, toy parts, craft materials and premium quality junk that play music, dance, greet friends, earn money, deliver candy, navigate obstacle courses, and wake you up in the morning.

Cathy Travis, author of The Constitution Translated for Kids, will be our Guest Speaker on Friday morning, September 19th at this year's Expo event. A resident of Washington, DC, she is currently retired as Communications Director for Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz (Texas). While many U.S. citizens cannot imagine reading the Constitution in its entirety, Cathy Travis has not only read it, but in her book, The Constitution Translated for Kids, she has actually translated the preamble, each article and amendment into modern-day terminology that an average fifth grader can understand. NOTE: This program is included with your General Admission fee to the Expo. You do not need to register for this class in advance or count it as a workshop.

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) will conduct a hands-on model rocketry workshop where students will be given instruction on designing, building and launching non-solid fuel model rockets. We will not launch rockets at the Expo. A presentation will also be given by a CAP pilot on opportunities to fly in CAP aircraft, both propeller driven and gliders, and how to earn a pilots license while participating in the CAP Cadet Program.

In this workshop a costumed educator will reveal to children the secrets of 18th century home textile production. Each student will get a chance to try carding wool before helping to spin it into yarn using a drop spindle. Children will examine other common fabrics used to make clothing during the 1700s including linen, wool, and silk. In conclusion students will investigate the many layers of an 18th century costume to discover what people wore and why.

Participants will learn about the history of postage stamps and the postal history and do various hands-on activities involving stamps. A free packet of stamps will be given to each participant.

Do you want to better understand the political process? Then come and experience TeenPact Mock Legislature. Through the fast paced, fun filled session, you will learn how to use Robert's Rules of Order. You will be able to debate bills and decide whether to pass them or to vote them down. This workshop will give you a taste for how wills are debated in the Massachusetts Legislature. Please come prepared to learn and to have fun!

Join US Fish and Wildlife Service for a program on how the notice the wildlife that lives around you. Learn how to identify animal signs and ways you can protect habitat.
Crystal Radio Building - For ages 8 and up/limited to 72 students
Saturday 1:30pm - Cotillion Room: 90 minute activity (counted as two workshops)
Students will build a complete crystal radio from scratch in less than two hours. All background history and theory will be discussed.
