Glass Geometry Camp
FRC Members: $300 per student
Non Members: $600 per student
Restricted to ages 12 and up.
Costs include all basic materials, room and
board (5 nights and meals).
This unique overnight program runs from Sunday afternoon through Friday afternoon. We ask that students arrive on Sunday, between 3pm and 4:30pm so that we may all have dinner together. (Students can arrive as early as 2pm and as late as 7:00pm if absolutely necessary.) Pick up will be on Friday around 1:30pm - at which time the students will present a showcase of their art work. You can expect to leave around 4:30pm on Friday.
This is a very rare opportunity for homeschooling students to spend a week working with Hans at his old farmhouse and studio which is located in rural Harrisville, NH looking out at quite a lovely view of Mt. Monadnock.
Students will learn to work with clay, paper and glass, develop 2D projects and go into designing and building 3-dimensional objects. The geometric math underlying all constructions will be discovered and applied. What better way to learn geometry than through hands-on art projects inspired by Hans Schepker, a certified Waldorf math and science teacher, who has been a teaching artist for 32 years!
This camp is offered once only each year exclusively through the Family Resource Center of New England for homeschooling students ages 12 and up. We have room for only 15 mature and responsible students capable of peacefully living and working together during these 5 days.
Students will be expected to wake up early when asked each day, monitor their own personal hygiene without adult direction, keep their sleeping and working areas clean, be respectful of the personal space of their co-habitants and their art-work, assist as needed at meal times, and obey general safety rules of the house and work studio.
Students will not need (and are asked not to bring) any personal bedding, as there are ample rooms with beds and sleeping spaces provided (which come with clean sheets, blankets and pillows).
All meals will be prepared by Han's wife Marcy. Meals will be simple and healthy. Morning meals will vary eggs, breads, cheese, nuts, and granola; Afternoon meals will vary sandwiches, salads, soups, and breads; Evening meals will vary pastas, turkey, chicken, soups, breads, and vegetables. Students are asked to not bring any food or drink with them. There will be plenty of healthy snacks and beverages available each day. House rules require no sugar snacks or drinks be consumed and none will be served.
If a student has peanut allergies, or dietary restrictions please let us know before registering so that we are sure we can accommodate any special needs.
All children will be expected to follow guidelines as outlined here and the house rules (which are pretty much spelled out here; other than no student can leave the property without adult permission and supervision). Students unable to abide by these rules will be asked to leave the camp. No refunds will be issued. Students will be asked to contribute their share of clean up daily, and Marcy prefers to be house cook.
Every registered student will be required to sign a Liability Waiver and a Medical Release form (which would grant Hans and Marcy permission to take the student to the hospital in case of an emergency.)
Parent Feedback and Comments from our first class in September:
My friend and I just got back from an amazing day at the Pear Tree (and Glass Geometry) Studios in Western New Hampshire. I have to say that I was completely amazed at what the children learned AND produced!!!! My older daughter came back with a Roman Numeral Glass Mosaic Clock that she had made in the Glass Geometry workshop and my younger daughter was in this Tapestry workshop, part of creating a 3 by 5 tapestry, that was stunning. Totally amazing!!!! From the Keefe family in NH
